VV1940’s Bra Pattern

←Introducing→

A brand new pattern inspired by an early 1940s brassiere from my personal collection of vintage clothing.

It gives a slightly pointed silhouette (but is not a bullet bra), is supportive of D & DD cups without using any underwires and looks just-right under 30’s & 40’s style clothing.

This is an 8 piece entirely new pattern I have drafted “from scratch”, not a copy of or based on a vintage sewing pattern. It has been graded into a wide range of sizes to fit 6 band sizes: for rib cages 26″-40″ and cups A through DD.

In the (many) months since I first blogged about this project I have made numerous samples up in different sizes and fabrics, fitted them on willing friends, had testers report back to me on the clarity of the instructions, and checked and re-checked the patterns for accuracy many times.

Sewing skill level is intermediate but using the included 9 page pdf tutorial with photographs of a bra in progress even less experienced sewers should get good results after a practise bra or two.

To decide the size pattern you need just click on and refer to my  Brassiere Measuring & Size Charts (pdf which can be viewed on-screen or printed ) for how to measure yourself and find your Band and Cup size.
Alternatively I can help you decide which size is best for you: you need to measure yourself and tell me both your full-bust and under-bust measurements. It is also helpful for me to know what size modern bra you buy as a comparison point .
NB: This bra is not sized the same as commercial bras so your VV pattern size will be different to the bra you are currently wearing. Taking your current body measurements is important to get the correct pattern size. Please do have a look at the chart I have linked to.
Two of my fitting models in VV brassieres.

(The girl on the left buys a commercial 32B but wears a VV28B and the woman on the right buys a 34F or 36DD but wears a VV32DD)
